NEWEST RESEARCH: Here's how many citizens of Serbia support joining the European Union (GRAPHICS)

If a referendum was held tomorrow with the question "Do you support Serbia's membership in the EU?", 49 percent of Serbia's citizens would vote for yes, 27 percent would vote against, 13 percent would not vote at all, while 11 percent did not know what to answer this question, the result of a survey on public opinion entitled "The European Orientation of Citizens of Serbia" conducted at the end of June by the Ministry of European Integration. The survey, which involved 1,064 respondents over 18 years old, was created according to the Eurobarometer standard.

Citizens' support to reforms is, as it was in previous years, very high. Of the total number of respondents, 66 percent think that the reforms necessary for the entry of our country into the EU should be implemented because of the welfare of the citizens and the creation of better organized Serbia.

The health system reform (16 percent), the fight against corruption (15 percent), the judicial reform (15 percent), the agricultural reform (11 percent) and the reform of the education system (11 percent) which are recognized by citizens as the most important ones and that have most influence on their every day life.

The next is the importance of consumer protection reform (9 percent), followed by environmental protection reform (7 percent) and better protection of human rights (7 percent).

The highest percentage of citizens, 59 percent of them, believe that the problems of Belgrade and Pristina should be resolved independently of whether the EU wants it or not, that is, more than half of respondents support the commitment of the Government of the Republic of Serbia to continue the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina and the willingness to come to sustainable solutions via dialogue.

For the majority of citizens, 17% of them, EU membership offers more employment opportunities, a better future for young people (16%), the ability to move freely within the EU borders (14%), and the ability to regulate the situation in our Country (12 percent).

Speaking of grants to Serbia, from 2000 to present, 23 percent of respondents have recognized that the EU has been the largest donor to our country in the last 16 years, 22 percent think it is Russia, 21 percent of citizens opted for China, while in the fourth is Japan with 11 percent. Official data show that, between 2000 and 2015, the European Union and its member states represent the largest donors, with around EUR 2.7 billion of donated funds, which significantly contributed to the development of Serbia.
