They say that Ohrid is the European Jerusalem due to the number of churches, monasteries and sacred places. There were 365 churches in Ohrid, one for each day in the year. Helen, who then received a name Elena, decided on this step because of her great love for her chosen man, a young man from Bitola.
Father Romeo, who performed the baptism, explained that it is done by dipping the girls head three times into the water, just like when Jesus was baptized in the river Jordan by St. John the Baptist.
Baptistery in the church "St. Trinity", said father Romeo, is now the only church in Macedonia with a double purpose.
Two cubic meters of water are used for baptizing adults, and 70 liters for children. Instead of the church, people can also be baptized in Ohrid lake, if they wish. Then father Romeo gets in the lake in his priest robes, and the procedure of baptizing is the same.
- A person who wants to change its religion comes to talk with us at first in order to introduce them to the Orthodoxy and to determine if the church will represent them in front of the God - father Romeo said, and he happily said that it happens more and more often that people from abroad of different religion come here to take Orthodoxy.
Helen was smiling all the time after the baptize was over.
- First I didn't know what the process looked like, I deeply knew that I was a part of Orthodoxy and I am happy that I was allowed to do it in Ohrid. I was nervous at first, but it is really exciting and wonderful experience - Helen said.
