Kosovo has the right to create the military: NATO is not against it, but there are two conditions

NATO doesn't say that they are against transportation of Kosovo Security Forces, because that is the right of the authorities in Kosovo, but every transformation must be conducted according to the Constitution with the consultations with the international community, announced by Robert Peschel from the NATO Public Diplomacy Division today.

- If we took that right from them, then we know what would that mean. However, we said multiple times that every conversation must be carried out in accordance with the Constitution in Kosovo and in consultation with the international community - said Peschel.

He said this at the panel "Opportunities and future plans for cooperation between Serbia and NATO" within the 6th NATO Week in Belgrade.

When it comes to the presence of KFOR in Kosovo, according to Peschel, there are no plans to reduce or change anything, and that their presence depends on the security situation.

NATO's position is to continue the search for a solution acceptable to all sides, added Peschel.

Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Branimir Filipovic, said that Serbia's position was that the transformation of Kosovo's security forces into the Kosovo Army was suppressed by UN Resolution 1244.

- There can't be two armies in the same place. NATO has a position that the transformation is possible through the constitutional framework, and we have in common that we are against unilateral moves. Precisely these moves by Pristina are the biggest problems in the region - Filipovic said.

He recalled that the problems began when Pristina unilaterally proclaimed the independence of Kosovo.

- Serbia expects a clear position of NATO just like two years ago when Pristina also tried to perform that transformation. It is better to solve some things earlier so they don't grow into potentials for tensions - Filipovic said.

He added that Serbia has certain expectations regarding the protection of cultural heritage in Kosovo and that it is very important that we can count on KFOR as the structure that is most capable of providing peace and stability, despite the fact that there are others like EULEX ...

- We expect KFOR to act as a prevention with its capacities - Filipovic said.
