"There were three thumps, then screams": Hit-and-run driver who injured three teens identified

Two of the three teenagers who were injured in a car accident in Salas Crnobarski near Bogatic after 10 p.m. on Thursday have been released from the in Sabac hospital for home treatment, while one of the victims remains in the orthopedics ward.

According to the latest information from the Sabac Police Department, a 59-year-old driver suspected of driving into them and then fleeing the scene was identified this morning. He comes from one of the villages near Bogatic - but no more details have been released in the interest of the investigation.

17-year-old sisters A.B. and S.B. from Visnjic suffered only minor injuries, while M. M. (16) from Banovo Polje, had his ribs broken.

Only mere luck is to thank for the fact that another great tragedy on Serbia's roads has been avoided.

Eyewitnesses to the accident say five children were walking along a ditch by side of the road, when a still unknown car collided with them.

"Three thumps were heard, followed by moaning and crying. Immediately a lot of people went out into the street and were astonished by the sight. Two girls lay by the side of the road crying, shaking with fear, while the boy was found thirty to forty meters away. The car probably picked him up onto the hood and he fell off there by the side of the road," says Milica Conjagic.

Without waiting for the ambulance to arrive the girls were taken to the Bogatic health center by Stanko Conjagic in his car, while the boy, who was bleeding and was unconscious, received help after about twenty minutes from emergency room doctors from Bogatic.

The injured girls are from Visnjic, near the town of Sid, and they were visiting their grandparents, as was the injured boy, who is their cousin.

The driver did not stop to help the children, but continued in the direction of Klenja. During the night the police mounted an intensive search for the hit-and-run driver.
