Former captain of the Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) national team, Emir Spahic, was injured in a car accident near Gacko and was soon transferred to a hospital in Trebinje, the website Vijesti.ba is reporting.

Spahic is currently in a hospital in Trebinje and should be transferred to the Clinical Center in Sarajevo by helicopter soon. It is not yet known whether his condition is life-threatening, nor the extent of his injuries, another Sarajevo-based website, Klix.ba said, adding that the footballer was conscious.

The car, in which Spahic traveled in the passenger seat, drove off the road. Initially it was determined that Spahic sustained minor injuries, as did the driver.

However, he later complained of pain in his leg, so the doctors suspected that it may be broken, which is the reason to transfer him to the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo by helicopter.

The Trebinje District Prosecutor's Office said that the prosecutor was informed about the car accident, but since there was only one participant and that minor injuries were involved, the prosecutor did not go to the scene.

The former BiH national team player ended his career two years ago in HSV, having played 94 games for the BiH national team and scoring seven goals.

He was the captain of the national team from 2004 to 2014. He last played for Bosnia against Greece on November 13, 2016.

Interestingly, Spahic has often been extremely temperamental, getting involved in physical altercations - one time with the current Red Star Belgrade captain Marko Marin, during a Bosnia vs. Germany match.

He also slashed with stewards during a Leverkusen-Bayern German Cup match, when he was prevented from escorting his friends to a stadium box, after which he was fired from the club.
