The United States Embassy in Serbia and the Red Cross of Serbia today organized a blood drive to commemorate the 18th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001.

US Ambassador to Serbia Kyle Scott, along with embassy staff, visited the Red Cross headquarters and greeted voluntary donors and volunteers, to say that he was proud of the blood drive on the day when more than 3,000 US citizens died tragically.

Scott recalled that the US Embassy has organized a blood drive nine times so far, together with the Red Cross of Serbia.

"This is an opportunity to remember that Americans from all over the country rushed to donate blood for the victims and the injured in the terrorist attacks, and to thank the Serbian community and give something back," said Scott.

He added that this was the first year of his mandate in Serbia when he did not donate blood in this drive, because he did that three months ago at the invitation of the authorities and during a blood shortage.

"Blood donations are a gift of life. They are painless and not difficult to do. I recommend it to everyone and it's important that Serbia, as well as other countries, have a blood supply for emergencies," concluded Ambassador Skat.

Secretary General of the Red Cross of Serbia Ljubomir Miladinovic expressed his satisfaction that the Red Cross, together with the US Embassy, is organizing a voluntary blood donation campaign as part of the regular collection of blood.

He noted that the Red Cross has been a partner with the US Embassy for many years, especially in the area of disaster preparedness and response, which, he added, strengthens the capacity of the Red Cross.

"The importance of donating blood is great for each community, especially during the summer when we face increased needs for both donation and blood collection. Special thanks to Ambassador Scott for his support and for the six blood donations during his tenure in Serbia," Miladinovic emphasized.

State Secretary of the Ministry of Health Vicko Ferenc appealed on behalf of the ministry and the blood transfusion service on donors, inviting as many as possible to contact them and donate blood.
