Unscheduled inspections in hospitals after 3 pregnant women and 4 babies die over past month

After three pregnant women and four babies died in just over a month, an unscheduled inspection is being carried out by the Ministry of Health in order to check health facilities in Serbia and determine if there was any malpractice, Vecernje Novosti writes.

The inspection is being done in gynecology and maternity wards in the Clinical Center of Nis and in general hospitals in Krusevac, Aleksinac and Majdanpek, the newspaper learned from the Ministry.

"Controls had been carried out within seven days of finding out about the deaths of pregnant women and babies," sources from the Ministry said, adding that the first findings have already been submitted but are not yet available to the public because additional checks must be carried out.

Novosti reports that so far no irregularities have been identified, adding that the details concerning the deaths will be known only after after receiving reports from unscheduled inspections.

The newspaper recalls that a mother and her baby died on August 1 in Nis, followed by the death of a woman who had given birth in n Aleksinac on August 8. A newborn died in the same town on August 17, while a pregnant woman lost her twins at eighth months pregnant on August 30. Another pregnant woman died in Majdanpek on September 1.
