Free tour of military galleries to mark the 327th anniversary of the Petrovaradin Fortress

On the occasion of marking the 327th anniversary of the beginning of construction of the new Petrovaradin Fortress, admission to the exhibitions at the City Museum of Novi Sad on the Fortress will be free on Friday, October 18.

A free tour of the Underground Military Galleries at the Fortress will be organized on the same day starting at 3 pm. On Tuesday, October 22, on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the Museum of the City of Novi Sad, admission to all of museum's facilities will be free of charge. Also, on the same day starting at 3 pm, another free tour of the Underground Military Galleries will be organized.

Anyone interested in visiting the Underground Military Galleries doesn't need to apply in advance - it will be enough to report to the museum's guide service 10 minutes before the start of the tour.

Opening hours of the Museum of the City of Novi Sad at the Petrovaradin Fortress are 9 am to 5 pm.

In 1692, after major battles against the Turks which lasted from 1683, the Austrian army, under the command of Ludwig Badensky, reclaimed the ruined medieval fort of Petrovaradin. It was then that the fortification and restoration of this still strategically important fortress began. Following the decision of the War Council to build a new fortress, according to the latest rules of military architecture, the fortification and the clearing of the terrain at the Upper Fortress began.

The cornerstone of the new fortress was laid on October 18 in the presence of the emperor's envoy Prince and Marshal Eugene Croy, at Leopold's Bastion. The day is marked as the beginning of the construction of the new Petrovaradin Fortress, work which, with interruptions, lasted until 1780.
