One of Serbia's greatest natural beauties comes with a dark legend wrapped in a veil of Vlach magic

True exoticism is hidden away in eastern Serbia, only 35 kilometers from the municipality of Zagubica

At the foot of the Beljanica Mountain, between the villages of Milanovac and Krupaj, lies one of Serbia's greatest natural riches and the trademark of the Homolje region, the Krupaj Springs.

The springs that create a karst lake on the surface are immersed in a setting of woods and clear mountain air. The healing waters of a thermal spring are mixed with the cold water from the Krupaj spring, which makes this place unique.

It's interesting to note that divers managed to descend to the bottom of the lake, at the depth of 123 meters, only once - where they encountered an entire maze of underground canals. Below are also the semi-submerged caves known as Zeludac ("stomach"), Tobogan ("slide"), Mala Soba ("small room") - sized 6 meters - Velika Soba ("large room"), Glava Ovna ("rams' head") - all representing a challenge to even the most experienced of divers.

It's only once you pass Kanal ("canal") that you enter Bezdan ("abyss"), with another underwater cave and the tunnels that have been dug leading to the surface.

The legend of the well

Homolj and Krupaj Springs hide a legend wrapped inside a veil of the Vlach magic. The legend has it that there is a hidden treasure in the Homolje Mountains. It's even believed that the mountain itself wallowed it, and that it's now located at the bottom of a golden cave. The cave is said to be guarded by Tartor, a water spirit, also called Starac ("old man") or Albatrn - who is preventing locals from entering the water during their relentless quest to find the buried treasure.

Although no one has yet found the treasure that the legend speaks about - there is one treasure of the Krupaj Springs that is accessible to all of us - the water that is coming up from the mountain and giving life to this entire oasis.
