Meteorologist Nedeljko Todorovic reveals when first snow will fall in Belgrade

Because of the Kosava wind, it will feel colder than it actually is

Meteorologist Nedeljko Todorovic says that snow will not fall in Belgrade this year by November 23, as statistics expect - but adds that it's time to replace summer clothes with winter ones, because the temperature will begin to drop starting next Monday.

Nedeljko Todorovic explains that any increase in wind speed, and especially of Kosava, by one meter per second has a cooling effect of approximately one degree.

"If the wind speed is six meters per second, it's as if it's six degrees colder," says Todorovic.

He announced that Kosava will blow on Tuesday and Wednesday, and then again from Friday to Monday, and pointed out that the rule according to which Kosava always blows an odd number of days is incorrect.

"That's some folk belief. It may make sense, but it's not precise, especially not in South Banat, where it blows for twice as many days as in Belgrade," Todorovic says.

What meteoalarm color codes tell us

Yellow meteoalarm was in effect yesterday, which means that wind speeds exceeded 17 meters per second, or 60 kilometers per hour, Todorovic explains. He said that orange meteoalarm is in effect in South Banat and Western Pomoravlje, i.e., a warning that the wind speed exceeds 24 meters per second, while Kosava reached 100 kilometers per hour in Vrsac today.

Although accidents are often caused by strong winds, Nedeljko Todorovic says that there is no room for fear and that people simply need to be careful and pay attention to the warnings issued by meteorologists.

"Yellow meteoalarm alarm is information more than a warning, while when orange is in effect, the wind can do damage. It's possible that it might lift up some loosely attached roof, an old tree or a traffic sign," explains Todorovic.

No snow any time soon

Statistics say the first snow in Belgrade falls on November 23. Todorovic says statistics are not wrong - but it just depends on how we interpret them.

"This year, snow will not fall on November 23. This is only a statistically calculated median day. It can fall both earlier and later. It will fall later this year. It fell earlier last year, on November 18," Todorovic recalled.

He points out that the temperature will drop starting from next Monday, with snow expected in mountain areas at the end of November, while the date remains uncertain regarding the lower regions. He warns that it's advisable to get warm clothes ready, as they will be especially needed in mornings and evenings.
