Pristina-based Gazeta Express writes that the US is considering withdrawing its troops from Kosovo unless Pristina abolishes taxes on goods from Serbia.

According to the newspaper, which is quoted by Kosovo online, US Ambassador to Pristina Philip Kosnett told the prime Minister of so-called Kosovo Albin Kurti that his country is considering such an option, which, the Gazeta says, is the most serious threat the US has made toward Kosovo so far.

The paper recalls that months ago there was speculation that Americans were considering removing Camp Bondsteels from Kosovo if political leadership continued to ignore the demands from the international factor to abolish the taxes, but that information was never confirmed.

Also, the newspaper recalls that Albin Kurti and Pristina parliament speaker Vjosa Osmani, as candidates for prime minister in the October 6 elections, promised to abolish the taxes and replace them with broad reciprocity measures with Serbia, but notes that they have not yet moved in that direction.
