The Serbian Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development has today sent a letter to high school directors in the territory of Serbia to postpone all planned study trips and excursions to Italy, Telegraf.rs has learned.

The ministry has ordered excursions to Italy to be put on hold until the health situation, arising from the deadly coronavirus, stabilizes in that country.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte spent all day on Sunday at the Civil Protection headquarters. He said he was surprised by the outbreak of the infection.

The Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also urged Serbian citizens not to travel to those parts of Italy infected with the virus.

"We recommend to the citizens of Serbia not to travel to regions that the government of Italy has designated as critical. And that recommendation will remain in force as long as the situation in that part of Italy is critical," said Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic.

In Italy, coronavirus has so far claimed 5 lives while more than 200 people have been infected.

The north of the country is blocked and 11 cities are put under isolation. There are about 50,000 people quarantined in their homes. Some cities have closed schools. The Venice Carnival has also been canceled.
