Borislav Colic, who was serving his sentence in Padinska Skela for committing monstrous murder, has been found dead in a corridor between prison cells, Srpski Telegraf reports.

As he was robbing their home, this war veteran killed in cold blood the three-member Smiljanic family, including a 3-year-old child. The bloodshed occurred in the Novi Sad settlement of Futog. Dobrivoje, Miomirka and their three-year-old son Ivan were all brutally murdered.

"Dobrivoje was found in the foyer, he opened the door to the killer who immediately liquidated him. He then came across Miomirka, whom he also shot dead. Clearly Colic went in with the intention of killing everyone he found in the house. What appalled even the most experienced police officers was that the body of the victims' three-year-old son Ivan was found in the living room. The child was sitting on a potty when the killer came in, approached him, put a gun to his forehead and pulled the trigger. Even in those bloody times, something like this was unthinkable," said the newspaper's unnamed source, who is said to be a former Serbian Interior Ministry (MUP) inspector who participated in the investigation.

The motive behind the unprecedented murders, as it turned out later, was robbery. The Smiljanics were considered a well-off family. Dobrivoje's father claimed that a suitcase containing 100,000 German marks disappeared from his son's home.

The search for the killer was under way. The police worked around the clock. When the killer was found, the arrest was just the beginning.

"He was a war veteran, mentally and physically prepared. The inspectors, including myself, took turns interrogating him, we were looking to provoke Colic in some way to admit to the act. We didn't let him sleep. But he was unbelievable. He would stand against the wall and start to get tired, to lose concentration. Then, at some point, if we didn't pay attention to him, he would close his eyes while still in a standing position. Moments later, when we would shake him awake, he was completely fresh, as if he had slept all night, so we would have to start all over again," the source said.

Eventually one of the inspectors applied a psychological trick.

"Colic was balding and was nervous when his head was not covered. In the end, we allowed him to wear a hat that he never parted with, and in return he admitted to the way he had committed the crime."

Borislav Colic was originally sentenced to death for robbery and murder. After that sentence was overturned, he was sent to prison for 40 years. He was supposed to be released in 2036, when he would have been 68 years old.
