Sunday was marked by the announcement of hunger strikes by both ruling and opposition politicians. First, the news came that independent member of the Serbian Assembly, deput Miladin Sevarlic had embarked on a hunger strike, and then that the leader of the opposition Dveri Movement, Bosko Obradovic, joined him. Then, a decision to start a strike was announced by the deputies of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) Aleksandar Martinovic and Sandra Bozic.

Sevarlic started strike, Obradovic joined him

Sevarlic started his hunger strike on Sunday, and he told reporters it was because he found it was "impossibile to win over the deputies in the Assembly to discuss the violations of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Serbia and the disrespect of (UN Security Council) Resolution 1244." He showed the journalists a statement of the ambassador of Russia, Aleksandr Botsan Kharchenko, made to the Politika newspaper, in which he stated that Resolution 1244 should be changed.

Sevarlic then released a recording of a statement of the president of Serbia about "the acquisition of sovereignty of Kosovo on its entire territory."

He said that Serbia does not recognize the state of Kosovo, but forces its citizens to become members of their assembly and government, which, he says, is high treason.

Sevarlic was later joined by the leader of the opposition Dveri Movement, Bosko Obradovic.

Martinovic and Bozic on hunger strike in front parliament

The head of the parliamentary group of the Serbian Progressive Party, Aleksandar Martinović, stated yesterday that he and his party colleague Sandra Bozic decided to go on a hunger strike because they believe that the time has come for the prosecution and judiciary in Serbia to react to Bosko Obradovic's outbursts.

"The prosecution must react when you throw deputy Marijan Risticevic on the ground, kick him in the head, inflict severe bodily injuries on him, and then say that Risticevic had a knife, while you know that he did not have a knife but car keys," Martinovic told journalists in front of the House of the National Assembly.

Martinovic further stated that was also speaking on behalf of all citizens who want Serbia to be a normal and decent state in which people do not fight in the street, and where political opponents do not fight, but speak in parliament.

"I'm asking competent prosecutors when they will react to the fascism in Serbia. It's impossible that people are prosecuted in Serbia for much lesser crimes, and then when you beat deputy Marijan Risticevic in front of the entrance to the Assembly, nothing happens. It can't be like that anymore," said Martinovic.

Martinovic and Bozic were sitting in chairs in front of the parliament, while Obradovic and  Severlic were in their immediate vicinity.
