The trial of Ninoslav Jovanovic, better known as "the Barber of Malca" - who abducted and abused M.K., a 12-year-old girl from the village of Suvo Do - starts today at the Higher Court in Nis. Jovanovic was brought to the court from the detention unit where he has been held since his arrest in January of this year.

Jovanovic should present his defense today, but the trial is not open to the public. He was ushered in through a side entrance of the Higher Court, away from journalists who gathered in front.

Jovanovic was taken inside the building in the same way the previous time.

At the preparatory hearing, which was closed to the public, Jovanovic declared himself regarding the accusations of the prosecution, disputing a lesser portion of them. The girl's parents have joined the criminal prosecution of Jovanovic.

The investigation against Jovanovic was conducted on suspicion that he committed the criminal acts of kidnapping and rape of a child. These crimes are punishable by imprisonment of 10 years to life in prison.
