Prime Minister of Serbia Ana Brnabic said today during an extraordinary news conference that we are approaching the worst parameters since the beginning of the coronavirus epidemic.

At the same time, she made a plea to wear masks, to respect anti-coronavirus measures, because if the measures already in place fail to bring good results, the authorities will have to resort to more restrictive decisions. As she said, she does not want a state of emergency to be reintroduced - but she "will not shy away" from it.

As of 3 pm on Friday and over the previous 24 hours, 18 people died in Serbia from coronavirus. The prime minister spoke about the fight against coronavirus in this country so far.

"The worst day since the beginning of the epidemic, in terms of the number of people on ventilators, was April 12. At that time, 146 people were on ventilators. We are now approaching that number," said the prime minister.

As she said, currently the worst situation is in Belgrade, followed by Sabac, Kragujevac, Novi Pazar.

According to her, the worst day in terms of the number of newly infected people was April 16.

"At that time, we had 445 new cases (in one day), and if we continue like this, we will, unfortunately, quickly reach those numbers as well," she stated.

As Brnabic pointed out, since June 30, when an emergency situation was introduced (in Belgrade and several other cities), there has been no significant improvement, with the exception of Thursday.

"We will monitor the development of the epidemiological situation with even greater attention and adopt measures accordingly. This is without a doubt the result of our behavior and a lack of discipline from 5 or 6 days ago, and we will see the result of the protests in 3, 4 days. The only thing I can do is plead with citizens to strictly respect all measures," said the prime minister.

"To be clear, we will not shy away from any measures to preserve people's health. My opinion is that the most effective measure would be to introduce a state of emergency," Brnabic pointed out.
