For the first time in Serbia, in the protected area of exceptional features, Vrsac Mountains, (Vrsacke Planine) a short-toed snake eaglet has been tagged with GPS telemetry, i.e., the movement of this endangered bird species will be monitored with the help of satellite transmitters.

These GPS devices provide a wealth of information to ornithologists based on which active protection measures are planned and implemented.

"This is a historic moment in the protection of endangered species, truly historic, because for the first time we are installing a satellite transmitter on one of these species, a migratory species. We get a lot of data, where they move, where they nest, where they spend the winter, where they go on their way to Africa..." said Zoran Karic from the Foundation for the Protection of Birds of Prey.

Dr. Sasa Marinkovic from the Institute for Biological Research of the University of Belgrade says that the practice in our country has been "not to touch" these endangered species.

"It is best not to touch them, because that is the best protection. However, it turned out to be very bad, because if we don't know the factors that threaten them, we cannot help them. Some species are suffering to such a degree that without our help they will certainly not survive. So, this is an appeal to the state authorities to enable such methods to be applied as much as possible in our country," Dr. Marinkovic told RTS.
