Getting infected with coronavirus after receiving the first dose of the vaccine is not uncommon, but even if you get the full vaccine and become infected immediately after that, you should not be surprised.

As Dr. Marija Gnjatovic, an associate of the Institute for Application of Nuclear Energy, explained for TV Prva, the vaccine needs time to start working.

"Full immunity is achieved about a month after receiving both doses of the Sinopharm vaccine, which is the one most (Serbian) citizens got," says Gnjatovic.

"I know that there are reported cases of citizens getting infected in the time between receiving the two doses or immediately after receiving the second, but for now there is no information that they are among hospitalized patients, and that enough time had passed since they received the second dose of vaccine."

She stressed that the possibility of infection is to be expected if you "picked up" the virus a few days after the second dose.

"The quality of vaccines must not be brought into question because of that, instead there simply is no mechanism that will protect you until the immune response develops after vaccination," Gnjatovic stressed.

For those who received the first dose and then got the virus, it is recommended to take the second after full recovery.

As epidemiologist Dr. Predrag Kon has told Telegraf, if that happens you should wait a month from the date of complete recovery and then receive the second dose of the vaccine.

Asked whether children should be vaccinated, Dr. Gnjatovic said that existing vaccines have yet to be adjusted to younger ages, as well as the dosage.

"With the vaccines that are currently available, vaccination of children should not be considered, the most important thing is to vaccinate the elderly, that is how we protect them as well," Gnjatovic explained.
