9-day-old baby from Kragujevac who had coronavirus dies

A baby from Kragujevac, who was infected with coronavirus, experienced a cytokine storm and developed symptoms like an adult, has unfortunately passed away, Telegraf.rs has learned. It was transferred to the University Children's Clinic in Tirsova Street in Belgrade, but passed away despite the doctors' best efforts.

The baby was previously treated at the University Clinical Center (UKC) Kragujevac, where the doctors had been fighting for its life since birth.

"A 9-day old newborn was transferred from UKC Kragujevac to UDK Tirsova in very difficult condition due to multisystem failure. During the treatment for Covid 19, which was confirmed in the newborn immediately after birth, all therapeutic procedures necessary for the treatment of Covid 19 infection in the neonatal age were applied in UKC Kragujevac," sources from Tirsova told Telegraf.rs.

"During the treatment, due to the development of multisystem failure of all organs, the newborn was transferred to the University Children's Clinic in Tirsova Street with medical supervision, in order to continue treatment, which included replacement of renal function and treatment of respiratory distress and secondary pulmonary hypertension."

They added that the therapy applied during the treatment, unfortunately, did not improve the baby's condition:

"Multisystem failure was getting worse, which lead to the death of the baby," Telegraf.rs has been told by this children's clinic.

The baby was born last Friday, April 9.

The child was born infected with coronavirus, which it contracted while in the mother's womb. The baby was doing fine in the first hours after birth, but then developed a fever in the third hour and soon all the symptoms of inflammation.

The baby had also been connected to a ventilator.
