"The Cukaru Peki mine will be opened in the fall and it will be the first green mine in our country, thanks to which Serbia will become the second producer of copper and gold in Europe," Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Mining and Energy Zorana Mihajlovic said today in Metovnica.

"Thanks to the 21st century technologies, it is possible to mine in an ecologically-friendly way," she added, speaking after the signing of a contract to build the water supply system in Metovnica.

She also said that Serbia currently accounts for five percent of copper produced Europe, and that after the opening of the Cukaru Peki mine, the country will be in second place, behind Poland. Mihajlovic added that the Bor smelter will relaunch operations in August and work according to much higher environmental standards.

"20 years ago, there were ideas to shut down RTB Bor, which would have brought this whole region into a big problem. Fortunately, with the government's and the president's engagement and Zijin's investments, that has completely changed," she said.
