One of the world's most beautiful streets is in north Serbia: Take a walk through Generala Drapsina

Generala Drapsina Street in the town of Kikinda is about two kilometers long. It is distinguished by its unique tree-lined sidewalks which has been ranked as one of the most beautiful in the world by the Architecture & Design website.

One of the symbols of Kikinda, for which this town is famous outside the borders of Serbia, is the unusual Generala Drapsina Street, a true green tunnel and an oasis of nature in the urban core of the city, RTS writes.

At one point urban planners, architects and ecologists decided in an international competition which is the most beautiful street in the world, and ranked this one in the north of the Banat region among the most impressive.

It is an avenue of trees under which the buildings and the street are nestled, which is why it was quite pleasant in the shade here, even during the peak of the heatwave. The 389 trees were planted at the end of the Second World War. These are mostly nettle trees, maples, lindens and a few mulberry trees.

"Well done to Kikinda residents who managed to save them from getting felled. There was a story six or seven years ago they would all be cut. I think that the residents of this street were ready to submit a petition to save the trees," says Milan Velimirov, who lives in the street.

His neighbor, Miodrag Dudic, claims that it is nice to live here until the fall comes. Then falling leaves represent a problem. But on the other hand, people don't have to use air conditioners in the summer.

The local Secretariat for Ecology pays special attention to Generala Drapsina Street, but this is not the only natural oasis in the urban zone of Kikinda.

"The green tunnel of our city is the pride of us, the people of Kikinda, and because of that, strict attention is paid to, first of all, the health of the trees, their vitality. Special care, special attention is paid to the line of American nettle trees that truly adorns our city. We plant flowers twice a year, that is somewhere around 25,000 flowering plants. So, from the very entrance to the city, the roundabouts, the ground level arrangement, and the greenery in general, great attention is being paid to it, and education about it," stresses Miroslava Krnic, from the Secretariat for Environmental Protection in Kikinda.

Unlike the city itself, the area around Kikinda is one of the least forested in Serbia. That is why tree planting campaigns are becoming more frequent, and it is expected that after 60 years, a part of the avenue of trees in one of the most beautiful streets in Serbia will have to be rejuvenated.
