Located in the very north of our country, near the border with Hungary, Subotica is considered the center of the North Backa District. According to the total number of inhabitants, it is second in territory of the province of Vojvodina, right behind Novi Sad.

Although there are many sights in the city itself, since it is one with a rich and long history, there is no doubt that Lake Palic, which is located nearby, is what has made Subotica well known.

What's also interesting is that fact that it has had as many as 200 different recorded names, which have been used during the long history of the city. Since this is a multinational environment, this fact should not be surprising, because many ethnic communities named the city in accordance with their ethnic identity.

Interesting architecture

The main characteristic of many buildings in Subotica is the recognizable architecture in the Art Nouveau style. Especially interesting is the Town Hall, which is one of the symbols of the city, but also Raichle's Palace, specific for the recognizable decorations made from Zsolnay ceramics, produced in the Hungarian city of Pecs.

The Palace of the Austro-Hungarian Bank, the building of the former National Savings Bank, known as the Yellow House, and Villa Konen, hidden in the Great Park, are just some of the interesting buildings to see when visiting Subotica.

City squares are no less interesting. Apart from the central Freedom Square, there is also St. Theresa's Square, which is dominated by a cathedral built in the second half of the 18th century, as well as Republic Square and Tzar Jovan Nenad Square.

There are numerous monuments in Subotica. The ones dedicated to Jovan Nenad and the Holy Trinity, and to Matthias Corvinus are just some of them. One of the monuments in Subotica is also dedicated to the founder of the first touring cinema in the area of what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Aleksandar Lifka.

There is a monument in Dimitrija Tucovica Street that is particular in every way. It is a monument dedicated to an unknown plumber.

Holy to all believers

Not only is it a city with different religious communities, they also profess their religions freely in Subotica. And they all have religious sites where they can do that unhindered.

Apart from a Serbian Orthodox church, which is dedicated to the Ascension of the Lord, and the one dedicated to Saint Demetrius, there is also a Jewish synagogue in Subotica, known as the Little Synagogue. On the site of the Subotica Fortress today stands a Franciscan church and monastery. In the first half of the 15th century, a shrine dedicated to St. Michael was erected. On the main road to Budapest is the Muhajir Mosque, built at the beginning of this century, which is open at the time allotted for prayer.

Don't miss Lake Palic

One extremely popular destination, Lake Palic, is located about 20 minutes' drive from the city. It is especially attractive to visit during the summer.

The promenade by the lake is ideal for rest and recreation. The Palic Zoo is also widely known. Not only can visitors enjoy flower beds for which it is famous, but also the open concept, where the animals are provided with maximum comfort.
