In a major operation carried out by the police and prosecutors' offices in Belgrade and Novi Sad, Gendarmerie officers R.L. (43) and R.M. (47), police officer from Belgrade M.K. (23) and police officer working at the Directorate for International Operational Cooperation S.T. (45) have been arrested on suspicion that they committed the criminal offense of abuse of official position.

The only woman who was arrested had the task of accessing the Interpol system to check who had an arrest notice issued against them. In return, she took money and gifts.

Gendarme R.L. is also suspected of illegal production, possession, carrying and trafficking of weapons and explosive substances and illegal possession of narcotics.

It is suspected that in July, R.L. asked R.M. to, while he was performing his regular duties, check through the records of the Interior Ministry (MUP) for a person from the criminal environment and find out if there was a warrant out for that person, which R.M. presented as an official action in his work report.

The following month, at M.K.'s request, S.T. is suspected of checked the Interpol database for the same person from the criminal environment, to find out whether an international warrant had been issued for him, and informed them about her findings.

It is also suspected that M.K. and R.L. provided physical security to the person for whom these checks were carried, as well as to his family, and in return received money and gifts over a longer period of time.

During the search of a rented apartment in Novi Sad which was used by M.K. and R.L. and which is located near the place of residence of the person with the criminal background, illegal weapons and narcotics were found.

The suspects have been detained for up to 48 hours and will be brought before the prosecutor along with criminal complaints.
