Indictment raised in the case of murder of toddler Danka Ilic
The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Zajecar has again filed an indictment against Dejan Dragijevic (50) from Zlot and Srdjan Jankovic (50) from Luka, who are suspected of murdering Danka Ilic, who was two years old when she disappeared in Banjsko Polje.
After the Higher Court sent the previous indictment back to be amended in order to "better clarify the state of affairs", the prosecution collected additional data within the legal deadline and resubmitted the case to the court for confirmation.
What are the suspects charged with?
The indictment charges Dragijevic and Jankovic with aggravated murder of a child. According to the prosecution:
On March 26, 2024, the suspects hit the girl with a company vehicle.
Instead of providing help, they put the child in the car and then murdered her.
They threw the body at a landfill, but later, it is suspected, moved it to an as yet unknown location.
In addition to the two, the indictment includes Radoslav Dragijevic, the father of one of the suspects, who is charged with assisting the perpetrator after the commission of a crime and failing to report a crime.
Evidence despite missing body
Although Danka Ilic's body has not been found even after months of a detailed search, the prosecution bases its indictment on:
GPS navigation: Data from the official vehicle accurately shows the movement and stay at the place of the child's disappearance.
Witness statements: Statements confirming the presence of the suspects in Banjsko Polje during the critical period.
DNA traces: Biological traces found during the investigation that link the suspects to the case.
What's next?
The Higher Court in Zajecar is now tasked with examining the new indictment. The court may:
Confirm the indictment, after which the main trial gets scheduled.
Send it back again (which is less likely at this stage).
Dismiss the indictment if it is established that it does not contain enough evidence.
If the indictment is confirmed and their guilt is proven in court, the suspects face life in prison.
