Indictment raised against director of Covid hospital in Batajnica: Patient died due to negligent treatment?

The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade has filed an indictment against Tatjana Adzic Vukicevic (55), a pulmonologist, on suspicion that in the period from April to May 2021, in the Batajnica Covid Hospital - as the head of the hospital - she applied an inappropriate method of treatment and acted negligently, which caused the health of a patient, B.M., to deteriorate to the point of her death.

At the same time, the suspect claimed that the said consequences would not occur, or that it would be possible to prevent them.

The indictment, which was submitted to the Higher Court in Belgrade for confirmation, charges the suspect with the criminal offense of serious crime against human health, which is punishable by a prison sentence lasting 2 to 12 years.

According to the indictment, there is justified suspicion that Tatjana Adzic Vukicevic placed the patient, who was infected with Covid from April 2 to April 20, 2021, in the semi-intensive care unit, even though she should have been immediately admitted to the intensive care unit, because she met all the criteria for that given that she also suffered from malignant breast tumor and showed signs of respiratory insufficiency.

At the same time, the suspect did not act according to the at the time valid Protocol 11 for the treatment of patients infected with Covid, which was in force in 2021, meaning that the patient was not prescribed an appropriate antiviral drug, even though she met all the conditions for this, considering the stage of the disease and laboratory results.

The indictment further states that had the woman received the drug, it would contribute to stopping the further progression of the disease.

Instead, the patient was prescribed what is said to be evidently inappropriate treatment, which all led to the deterioration of her general health, as a result of which she died on May 3, 2021.
