Drecun: KFOR moves increase security risk for Serbs

The chair of the Committee for Defense and Internal Affairs of the Serbian National Assembly, Milovan Drecun, assessed that KFOR's moves to reduce the number of its members on the bridge over the Ibar River in Kosovska Mitrovica and to begin the integration of the so-called personnel of the Kosovo police into the KFOR security structure around the Visoki Decani (Serbian Orthodox) monastery, are dangerous for Serbs and increasing the security risk for them.

"This is a very wrong step by KFOR, which fully responds to the demands of Albin Kurti and the temporary institutions of self-government, but it raises the security risk for the Serb people to the maximum and sends a message that it simply does not act in accordance with (UN Security Council) Resolution 1244," Drecun told Radio Beograd.

Drecun emphasized that KFOR must be the first and only force that will provide a safe environment for the Serb people.

However, he pointed to the fact that in the last five years in the north of Kosovo, where KFOR is intensively present, the number of Serbs has decreased by 18 percent, stating that this is happening because of the terror carried out by Pristina, which he said the UN mission is not reacting to.

"It is evident that since the Turkish general has been at the head of KFOR, KFOR has been behaving in a very biased manner, i.e. one-sided, and that it (the UN mission) has been undertaking activities that Pristina actually asks of it," said Drecun.

Drecun cited examples to support this claim, such as including allowing the import of weapons to Kosovo and Metohija, the entry of members of the so-called Kosovo Protection Corps to the north, as well as turning a blind eye to the physical terrorizing of the Serb population.

Drecun warned that in the future KFOR forces will be present in much smaller numbers and significantly less ready to react in a timely manner.

He added that the transfer of jurisdiction to Pristina institutions is contrary to UN Security Council Resolution 1244.

"The Kosovo police are not and cannot be a safety factor for the Serb people, because the members of the Kosovo police and special parapolice units endanger the safety of Serbs to the maximum extent, they terrorize them to the maximum extent, physically harass them, arrest and persecute them," said Drecun.

He added that transferring part of KFOR's responsibility to Pristina institutions is either a wrong assessment or a deliberate political decision that leads to leaving the security sector to the authorities in Pristina.
