Vucic: I was against passing the law on foreign agents because Serbia is a stable country
The leader of the "United Serbia" election list, Aleksandar Vucic, said last night that he was against the adoption of the so-called law on foreign agents because Serbia is now a politically and economically stable country and cannot easily collapse, but also that he wanted to avoid us being called a totalitarian and autocratic state because of it.
In an interview with RT Balkan, he said that no one denied Vuksa Dragovic's startling claims about how much money went into NGOs in Serbia - 1.3 billion euros.
"As you noticed, no one denied it. Because it's impossible for them to deny it, he just added up the figures. And he said, 1.3 billion euros," said Vucic.
Asked if, since that's the case, we should have passed that law after all - which is known as the "law on foreign agents" or the "law on transparency" - Vucic said that he was against it and that he talked about it with Milorad Dodik yesterday.
"I was against it because I was always sure that, no matter how much money they spend, no matter how much money they give, that today Serbia is stable both politically and economically and that they cannot bring it down," said Vucic.
When asked if he thinks that he made a mistake in his assessment regarding the adoption of the law, Vucic said that he is not sure.
"Would I do the same again, yes. And why? Why, when you see what you did two years ago... because I like to test my own strength, and my people and myself. Some would say that's a masochistic approach, I'm not sure, but I also wanted, which is certainly wrong, to avoid being told that we're a totalitarian and autocratic country or I don't know what, no matter how stupid, inaccurate that would be. I probably wanted to avoid that, which I also didn't manage to avoid, because whatever I did, it would have been the same," said Vucic.
Asked if that is why he accepted some of Crta's amendments and objections to the election law, Vucic said that he did not accept it, nor did he know that Crta was behind it, but that it was actually done by other people, but they did it with his consent.
"I don't know anything about that Crta, because I gave them the freedom. I said: do everything you think will contribute to Serbia progressing on the European path, to open a cluster for you. And I tell you: it won't happen. This will be a lesson for you, from me, you do everything and I tell you: it won't happen. And when it was over, ask Ana (Brnabic), she came and said: 'How did you know, boss'? And I said 'Well, I told you, I'm not blind, I'm not so stupid'," said Vucic.
