The United States is calling on Serbia and Montenegro to show restraint, avoid any action that could lead to tensions or violent actions, and to engage in constructive dialogue on a sensitive issue, the State Department told Voice of America.

This is stated in State Department's response to a Voice of America query to comment on the rise in tensions between Serbia and Montenegro over the adoption of the Law on Freedom of Religion.

In a written response a State Department spokesman stated that "the US respects the right of all sovereign countries to adopt and enforce laws that are consistent with democratic norms and without foreign interference."

The response also points out that the United States strongly supports fundamental freedoms, such as freedom of speech, association and assembly, and the right of individuals to peacefully express their freedom of religion or belief.
