Ministry of Defense: No doubt mandatory military service is something that needs to come back

Creating conditions for the continuation of mandatory military service is one of the most difficult tasks of the Ministry of Defense for 2021

Assistant Minister of Defense for Human Resources Katarina Tomasevic said on Tuesday that there is no doubt in the Ministry that reinstating mandatory military service is something that should be done.

Speaking during a panel organized by the Student Parliament of the Faculty of Law on the topic of introduction of mandatory military service, she presented new, improved measures that the Ministry of Defense has been working on in the previous period, in order to provide better conditions for the implementation of a possible return to mandatory military service.

Tomasevic stressed that this is a large-scale and demanding work, and very important for the state.

"For us in the Ministry of Defense, there is no doubt that regular military service is something that needs to come back. We will continue to work on all important activities in that direction, and we will try to do everything to be ready when the state makes a decision. We have to be careful, to fill the ranks of Serbian Army, primarily because of the security environment, but also because of all the other things because of which an army exist," Tomasevic told those gathered, the ministry announced.

After reviewing 11 years of voluntary military service, Colonel Dragan Kotarlic presented to the audience what the defense system is thinking about as they analyze the reintroduction of military service, and presented a Gantt chart of activities, prepared by the Ministry of Defense, aimed at creating optimal conditions for implementing such a decision.

"In the Ministry of Defense, we are preparing as if the state leadership will make a decision to reintroduce mandatory military service. A working group headed by the minister of defense has been formed, and information is submitted monthly about everything that has been done, as well as about all problems and various scenarios under consideration, while creating conditions for compulsory military service is one of the Ministry of Defense's most important tasks for 2021, and I have no doubt it will be next year as well," Kotarlic stressed.

Lecturers from the Faculty of Law, Professor Dr. Bojan Milisavljevic and Assistant Professor Dr. Milos Jovanovic also spoke at the panel.
