A cargo barge hit a pillar of the 25 May bridge on the Danube in the early hours of Friday. For this reason, traffic and the Backa Palanka-Ilok border crossing were closed until an investigation and damage assessment had been carried out.

It all happened this morning around 2 o'clock, when the Romanian ship "Antonia," which was pushing a loaded barge, hit the pillar of the bridge at the Backa Palanka border crossing.

The Romanian-flagged ship was pushing a barge with 1,000 tons of artificial fertilizer when it hit the bridge.

The force of the impact caused the barge to start taking on water and it soon sank in the river. In addition to the police, firefighters also came to the scene, because the initial report was that the ship itself had sunk, but fortunately it turned out that only the barge ended up at the bottom of the Danube.
