President Aleksandar Vucic said last night that the December elections in Serbia were called at the express request of opposition parties, although he asked them not to do that.

"They asked that parliamentary, and local elections in Belgrade be held at the same time. They asked for it in writing. They got both, and the provincial elections. Most of the local elections have not been held, for example Nis and Novi Sad," Vucic said during his appearance on RTS.

Commenting on a resolution of the European Parliament (EP) regarding the December elections in Serbia, Vucic said that it states that he wants to strengthen his rule and that of the party he until recently led, but he again stressed that the elections were called at the request of the opposition.

"Another stance from the resolution is that Serbia brutally overstepped (state) powers during an attack on students and demonstrators in front of the city hall in Belgrade. But the police were the ones who endured terror for two and a half hours at the hands of some thugs who pelted them with rods, stones. Five police officers were seriously injured," said Vucic and added that the police were lawfully protecting against illegal entry into a state institution.

He assessed that the police action in question was much shorter and more effective compared to what police forces do in other countries and added that Serbia is waiting for the reports of the OSCE and ODIHR regarding the elections.

Vucic stated that the true goal of the EP resolution was to "pour a bag of lies all over Serbia" because of geopolitical interests.

"These are, an independent Kosovo, and for Serbia to agree to that. Number two - (Serbia to impose) sanctions against the Russian Federation, and three, even easier realization of (their) other interests, political, economic and corruptive," said Vucic.
