Basketball Federation of Serbia, KSS, announces decision regarding referee Uros Nikolic, who got arrested
Well-known basketball referee Uros Nikolic got arrested in a major international operation, in which 10 people have been detained, all of them accused of involvement in an organized criminal gang, which is suspected of committing most serious crimes - and this has prompted action from the Basketball Federation of Serbia, FSS.
Uros Nikolic, who has been refereeing the EuroLeafue competition for years and is considered to be one of the best Serbian basketball referees, has been arrested because he is suspected of being a financial supporter of the so-called Vracar Clan criminal gang (Vracar is a municipality in central Belgrade).
250,000 euros in cash, gold bars and expensive watches were found in Nikolic's apartment, according to Serbia's Interior Minister Ivica Dacic.
Now, the Basketball Federation of Serbia reacted and suspended Uros Nikolic.
"The president of the Referee Commission of the Basketball Federation of Serbia suspended referee Uros Nikolic due to reasonable suspicion that he committed a violation, for which a time-based penalty of banning a basketball referee may be imposed.
The decision will be submitted to the Judicial Commission for further disciplinary proceedings, based on the Disciplinary Rulebook of the KSS," the KSS statement said.
Uros Nikolic made many controversial decisions during his career, one of the striking ones being to kick out the wife of the current KSS president, Nebosa Covic, from a basketball venue.
