Nikola Stanic, a truck driver from Arandjelovac, was beaten 10 days ago by Hungarian police officers at the Horgos border crossing because, as the young man claims, they thought he was a migrant. After the unpleasant incident when police officers from Hungary slapped Nikola and knocked him to the floor, this Arandjelovac man turned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As Nikola explains for Telegraf.rs, he gave a statement at the Ministry, which was forwarded to the Serbian embassy in Budapest. He says that a procedure was launched soon after against the police officers who abused him.

"Fortunatel, there are videos from cameras of the whole event. I also had witnesses who saw the police beat me. One of the police officers then shattered my phone. She has been dismissed while proceedings are still pending against others. They told me this from the embassy," says Nikola.

On the last day of November, at the Horgos border crossing, Stanic went back to collect some customs papers that the Hungarian customs had forgotten to hand back to him.

"I headed back to the Hungarian customs on foot to pick up my papers. I showed my passport at the border gate and passed without any problems," he tells us.

However, when he entered the customs office, four police officers followed after him.

“One of them slapped me and knocked me to the floor. After that, two more police officers jumped on me and handcuffed me. My colleagues saw this and started shouting that I was a driver, not a migrant, as the police initially thought," explains the young man.

After Hungarian police ID'd Nikola and allegedly realized that he was not a migrant but a driver from Arandjelovac, they removed his handcuffs and released him.

The young man is now in good health and has no permanent injuries. He added that he requested medical help immediately after the incident, but was only taken to a health facility after waiting for two and a half hours.
