In the Clinical Center in Nis, 384 patients infected with coronavirus are currently hospitalized, of which two thirds are in a very serious general condition, says the assistant director of the Clinical Center Nis, Professor Doctor Radmilo Jankovic.

Half of the patients, 190 of them, require oxygen therapy, which, says Jankovic, is a great challenge for the entire health care system in Nis.

The biggest clinical challenge, says Jankovic, are more than 60 patients in the intensive care unit, half of whom are on invasive mechanical ventilation, and half require intensive respiratory support.

"The clinical pictures and presentation of Covid-19 are very dramatic. It happens that there is not enough time to test a person, that their condition worsens so much that urgent transport is necessary with a typical clinical manifestation of Covid-19 and we do not have time to put them in some semi-isolation because they require intensive treatment very quickly. We do not have asymptomatic, easier cases in the Clinical Cener (KC) Nis," says Doctor Jankovic.

"Unlike the flu, when we had patients on mechanical ventilation and it was very difficult to achieve adequate oxygenation of the lungs, now we have much less of that problem. Now the disease has a systemic character and primarily affects the coagulation system, from minute to minute the question is whether complications related to acute liver failure, especially kidney failure, can occur. We have justified doubts, there is a frequency of blood clots, both in the central nervous system and in the kidneys. What's now already a great clinical experience we have indicates that this is far from a banal respiratory infection, even the most serious one we had with the swine flu infection. Intensive care units are also full in smaller hospitals, in Uzice, Cacak..."

In an interview with TV Pink, he said that there are many children in the Clinical Center in Nis who are under single-day or multi-day observation and who have not had severe clinical pictures, and that two pregnant women are currently accommodated, one of whom is on mechanical ventilation.

Another pregnant woman from Kursumlija was admitted four days ago and she is in the hospital without oxygen support.

"We had a fatal outcome of a pregnant woman in the fifth, sixth month of pregnancy, which shows that Covid-19 does not choose the age structure or gender ," said Jankovic.

He stated that in the last few days, more than 20 patients from the Gadzin Han Gerontology Center have been admitted to the Clinical Center in Nis.

He says that the situation in Nis has been relatively stable for the last two weeks, because the number of admissions and discharges has a good ratio, so that the number of patients at the Clinical Center in Nis is not increasing at a great rate.

"If this trend continues without any significant increase in the number of admissions, I think that we will welcome the peak we expect at the end of the week with sufficient capacity," said Jankovic.

He stated that there are another 160 free beds for Covid patients in the Clinical Center in Nis and about 20 free ones in the intensive care unit.

He says that currently one third of the patients are mostly from Nis, and two thirds from other towns in southeastern Serbia.
