Djerlek: Situation deteriorating every day is signal we need new measures, old ones are not working

State Secretary in the Ministry of Health Mirsad Djerlek told RTS that the worsening of the situation from one day to the other is a signal that we need to react and adopt new measures because, he added, it is obvious that the existing ones have not produced results.

"If we manage to establish control with new measures and if we have mass support from citizens, who should show maximum responsibility, it's realistic to expect that we will have good results. Results are expected in 7 to 10 days after new measures take effect," said Djerlek.

He added that the capacities in Belgrade have been filled, and that there are still more patient admissions than discharges.

"The situation is difficult and uncertain in all of Serbia and we have to fight in the whole country," said the state secretary of the Ministry of Health.

According to the latest measures, hospitality industry establishments and service facilities, including shopping malls, will only be able to stay open until 5 pm on weekdays, and will have to be closed during weekends.

Djerlek says that after ten days, the situation will be re-evaluated, and if necessary, even more rigorous measures can be expected.

He said that the number of new cases in Belgrade is showing a  kind of stagnation. However, Covid hospitals' capacities are full and doctors and hospital directors are trying to redistribute patients who are exhibiting a difficult clinical picture.
