President of the National Assembly of Serbia Ivica Dacic said on Sunday that it is necessary to once again launch a public debate on changing the Constitution, stressing that this is a change exclusively concerning the independence of the judiciary.

The stories that the preamble regarding Kosovo (that states it is an integral part of Serbia) will be changed are empty stories, Dacic pointed out while speaking for TV Pink.

He stated that a parliamentary committee did not adopt the proposal to change the Constitution, but made the decision that, before that happens, it is necessary to hold another round of consultations, bearing in mind the different views and the need to form as broad a social consensus as possible.

Dacic specified that a vote was taken on the proposal of the president of the Committee on Constitutional Issues and Legislation, Jelena Zaric Kovacevic, who, he added, will organize a discussion with the Association of Judges, the Association of Prosecutors and other actors whom this topic concerns.

"A public debate is needed to see once again whether this is what is really wanted," said Dacic and added that the debate should not last too long.

He said that various stories have emerged according to which this National Assembly wants to "push through some changes to the Constitution by force or fraud" and stressed that this is exclusively about changing the Constitution concerning the independence of the judiciary, i.e., how judges and prosecutors are selected.
