Patriarch Porfirije supports canceling EuroPride: "It was necessary. Marriage is union between man and woman"

Serbian Patriarch Porfirije said in a special statement that canceling the EuroPride event was the right decision.

Porfirije says that not only in Serbia, but everywhere where the Serb people live, the announcement that EuroPride would be held in Belgrade caused great debates, divisions, controversies and conflicts.

"This topic was artificially imposed on us and is completely contrary to the value system of our people, as well as that of our brothers and sisters of other religions and nations with whom we live. Representatives of traditional churches and religious communities directly testified to me about this," said the patriarch.

He pointed out that he considers the canceling to be the right move.

"In the souls of us Orthodox Christians, the teaching of the Church is already rooted in the opening pages of the Bible, where it is written that God created humans as two sexes, male and female, which means that marriage and family are from the beginning of the world until the end of the world defined as a union of love between a man and a woman, and their children," said the patriarch.

He stressed out that "we fully understand the fundamentally justified great concern of our people who, during the crude promotion and imposition of policies and ideologies aimed at destroying the pillars on which our identity has been built for centuries so that everything becomes fragile, relative and fluid, felt there was a deep and systematic endangering of all fundamental values to which we have been devoted for centuries, especially the sanctity of marriage and family."

"For these reasons, several times in direct conversation with the highest representatives of the state, we stated the reasons why we consider it necessary and justified to cancel EuroPride," he added.

"At the same time, I remind you that the Church of Christ respects the God-given freedom of every human being and that is why the Church is against any form of violence, public branding and persecution of anyone. Evil is not cured and violence is not defeated, it only multiplies in that way," said the patriarch.
