"I only hang out with corpses, it's weird to see someone alive": Belivuk's "right hand" is in court today

Marko Miljkovic, the accused member of Veljko Belivuk's criminal group, will present his defense today before the Special Court in Belgrade.

Many criminologists believe that Miljkovic became the darkest figure in the most monstrous criminal clan operating in Serbia, which over time earned him the nickname Mesar ("Butcher").

The indictment charges him with conspiracy, kidnapping, drugs and murder.

According to the indictment, Miljkovic was in charge of luring the victims to "the house of horrors" in Belgrade's suburban settlement of Ritpek. It further alleges he had the decisive say on how to kill people, but also on how to get rid of the body. He allegedly also came up with the idea of immersing the victims in acid.

To outfox a rival and lure him to the slaughterhouse... that's what, according to cooperating witness Bojan Hrvatin, was "Miljkovic's forte."

He would take the victims' mobile phones and then impersonate them in communications with their associates, his rivals.

"I have to go on a trip, get some rest, I'll go crazy, bro! I only hang out with corpses, it's weird to me when I see somebody alive," Miljkovic wrote in a message cited in the indictment.

Judging by the prosecution's allegations, Miljkovic had a large collection of photos of massacred people in his phone, which is one of the main pieces of evidence against this criminal clan. Hrvatin told the Prosecutor's Office that Miljkovic also showed him pictures of decapitated members of their Kavac Clan (a Montenegrin crime group), who were killed by a rival clan.

"He liked to keep pictures in his phone, I don't know why, but he liked it and had a phone full of those pictures. He had pictures of what (members of other clans) did against us, so they would sent that to us. A whole body with the head cut off, he showed me that specific picture and said it was not us who did it, but the Skaljari group (the rival Montenegrin crime group)," Hrvatin said in his testimony.

Treatment of women

According to the press, Miljkovic was known to be especially crude to women and girls: he did not court them but was aggressive toward them. During the investigation, it was said that he tortured Lazar Vukicevic before killing him because of his wife. The father of the victim said that his son was on bad terms with Marko because he had been in a relationship, in 2007 and 2008, with Miljkovic's current wife.

"Bro, there's nothing I like better than that we skinned Laza (Lazar), bro I can't describe it to you... Look, we skinned Laza, we skinned Kasap (Hodzic), we skinned Zet (Spahic) and here's Kapetan, we will skin him in a few days, so, bro, today, we killed them, and they're all the key ones," reads one of Miljkovic's messages was sent via the encrypted Sky app.

Defense

The accused Miljkovic told the court earlier that 14 DNA traces of persons who have not been identified have been found in Ritopek.

"He asked the judge if these were the traces of some new victims, killers or someone else. 'These images of the cutting up and grinding (the victims), which the prosecutor proposes as evidence, you can't even see in Hollywood movies. This is a photo montage," Miljkovic said in the courtroom, then continued:

"Judge, if Sky passes (as evidence), this can happen to you, too."
