Minister Grujicic: External commission to investigate the case of Marko who died after colonoscopy procedure

Minister of Health Professor Dr. Danica Grujicic announced that the death of 30-year-old Marko Stojanovic, who died after fatal complications developed in the wake of a colonoscopy procedure done in the hospital in Cuprija, will be additionally investigated by an extraordinary appointed external expert commission.

"There was inspection of the Ministry of Health at the hospital in Cuprija on Monday, and based on the the medical documentation they went through, it was established that the complication that occurred during the colonoscopy was immediately detected. That the patient had an abdominal scan immediately, and then was prepared for surgery and operated on, and that this problem was taken care of. An extraordinarily assembled external professional supervisory body will have to say how the other complications occured," the minister said.

The newly elected minister of health stressed that, as the president of the Republic of Serbia's Expert Commission for Neurosurgery, always insisted on external professional supervision.

"It is important that the entire case is examined by people who did not participate in the treatment, that is, someone who is neither from the Clinical Center of Serbia, nor from Kragijevac, nor from Cuprija," the minister pointed out.

"We will form such an unbiased commission and they will most likely go to Cuprija, Kragujevac and Belgrade next week. That's the only way we'll have a complete picture of what happened."

Reports said earlier that Marko Stojanovic died while in an induced coma. According to his wife, he had reported to the doctor complaining of bloating, and a colonoscopy was scheduled.

Also according to media reports, the end result was the puncturing of both the colon and the small intestines, and the stomach. He also had injuries to the esophagus - most likely from getting intubated - and to his lungs.
