The Kosovo police announced that the prosecutor's office and the health inspectorate launched an investigation against the gynecology department of the General Hospital in the town of Pec, after it was revealed that someone there mistakenly put the body of a dead baby in a washing machine, from which it was removed in pieces, Index Online reported, Kosovo Online writes.

Despite the hospital staff's insistence to hide this scandal, family members informed the police.

The baby's father said the case shocked his family and that the whole thing came to light when the hospital refused to hand over the baby's body. The father never stopped trying to find out the truth about his dead baby, but was shocked when he eventually saw the remains, after they were taken out of the hospital washing machine along with some bed sheets.

The case has been confirmed by the Kosovo police, who said that the investigation is being conducted by the prosecution and the health inspectors.

"The police were informed about the case that happened in the Regional Hospital in Pec and immediately went to the scene, the state prosecutor as well. The health inspectors also came to the scene. The case, by order of the state prosecutor, is being investigated by the state prosecutor and health inspectors," according to the police.

Sources at the Pec hospital say that the hospital is trying to hide the case at all costs, putting pressure on the staff so that information does not get out. They are even trying to shift all the blame to the maids, in order to protect the gynecology ward's medical staff.

In the meantime, the General Hospital in Pec announced on its website that seven employees have been suspended and that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against them, writes Reporteri.

"The case is still under investigation and as soon as the investigative bodies and the health inspection come out with the findings and the final procedure, the public will be informed of the details and adequate measures, envisaged by law," the announcement states.

The spokesman of the Basic Prosecutor's Office in Pec, Shkodran Niki, said that the case happened last week and that the initial phase of the investigation is under way.

"We are in the initial phase of the investigation and cannot share more information due to the sensitive nature of the case. The prosecutor has met with the baby's parents and informed them about the whole case," he said.
