Serbian Ministry of Justice: "Attack on Vucevic's home is an act of vandalism that undermines the rule of law"

The Serbian Ministry of Justice today condemned an attack on the family home in Novi Sad of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) leader Milos Vucevic in Novi Sad.
The ministry stressed in a statement that this kind of violence represents a cowardly act of vandalism and seriously threatens the basic values of a democratic society, the rule of law and the safety of citizens.
The Ministry also said that it expects the competent authorities to identify and prosecute the perpetrators of this attack without delay, in order to clearly demonstrate that Serbia remains committed to the rule of law.
"We remind that according to the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia, as well as the European Convention on Human Rights, respect for private and family life, as well as the family home, is one of the basic values in any civilized society. Threats and attacks targeting the home and family are contrary to all the values that the majority of Serbian citizens stand for," the statement said.
The Serbian Ministry of Justice added it will, within its competences, provide full institutional support to the prosecuting authorities and courts with the goal of efficiently prosecuting those responsible, in order to guarantee the right to safety and protection of private and family life to all citizens.
"Violence will never be stronger than the rights and freedoms protected by our Constitution, which represents a value of the majority in Serbia," the statement concluded.
A group of citizens, prompted by so-called assemblies of citizens and students participating in blockades in Novi Sad, gathered last night at Milos Vucevic's registered home address.
They said that one of the reasons for the protest was the decision of a local court to suspend the proceedings against four SNS activists who were in January involved in incidents in front of that party's premises.
