Serbia ranked best in region, 11th in Europe in terms of women's participation in political life

According to the latest "Women's Power Index" survey, Serbia ranks high in terms of gender equality and political participation.
The survey covered 193 UN member states that were assessed according to their progress in gender equality and political participation.
The data included in the research was the share of women serving as heads of state or government, in government cabinets, national parliaments, as candidates for parliament and in local self-government bodies.
Our country ranked 22nd in the world, with a 53 percent share of women in all different levels of government, 11th in Europe and best in the region! Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, and Croatia are all far behind.
There are currently nine ministers in the Government of Serbia who are women, while at the local level, one example is the city of Novi Sad, where there are more women at the helm of city councils than ever before - seven.
Strengthening democracy and role models for future generations
Many studies have shown that greater participation of women in politics in a country contributes to reducing corruption, increasing transparency and better functioning of institutions. Women in politics often insist on social issues and long-term solutions more than men in the same positions.
According to the 2022 population census, there are 183,000 more women than men in the Republic of Serbia.
That means women make 51.4 percent of the total population, while the participation of women in politics means that political decisions better reflect the interests of the entire population, not just a part of it.
Also, when girls see women in positions of power, they receive a strong message that they, too, can become leaders, decision makers and active participants in society. This encourages more young women to engage in public life.
