Acting director of the General Hospital in the town of Cacak, Dejan Dabic, has resigned, while external oversight of the hospital, which will check the quality of professional work performed there, is underway, the Ministry of Health has announced.

On Tuesday, inspectors were sent to the Cacak hospital to investigate the circumstances that led to the death of a 4-year-old girl, who passed away after tonsillectomy performed in that healthcare institution, and external professional oversight should evaluate the quality of professional work, i.e. the doctors' actions in this case.

The oversight process is carried out by eminent doctors and professors from tertiary healthcare institutions, said a press release.

It is stated that all the results of the oversight and inspection work will be transparently available to the family of the deceased child as well as the general public.

The Ministry of Health offered its most sincere condolences to the family, noting that the doors of the Ministry are open to them.

E.M. died at the Mother and Child Institute in Belgrade after being transported there from the General Hospital in Cacak due to complications that developed after the tonsillectomy surgery, the media reported earlier.

The Higher Public Prosecutor's office in Cacak announced on Tuesday that an autopsy has been ordered and that the prosecution will then decide on the further course of action.
