Will Radovan Karadzic be allowed to attend funeral of his wife Ljiljana? Here's what they say in The Hague

Graciela Gatti Santana, the president of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals located in The Hague, had no comment when asked whether the first president of the Serb Republic (RS, Serb entity in Bosnia and Herzegovina), Radovan Karadzic, will be temporarily released in order to attend his wife's funeral.

"The only thing we can say is that the president of Mechanism has no comment on the inquiry you sent," the press service of Mechanism stated, Nezavisne Novine is reporting.

Radovan Karadzic was sentenced to life in prison by the Hague Tribunal for war crimes in BiH, and was in 2021 transferred to serve his sentence in a British prison on the Isle of Wight.

Goran Petronijevic, a member of Karadzic's legal team, said earlier that due to confidentiality, he could not talk about Karadzic's possible conditional release because of the death of his wife, noting that the procedure is very complicated.

Ljiljana Zelen-Karadzic died on Wednesday in East Sarajevo at the age of 81. She will be laid to rest on Friday in Pale.
