Son of Ratko Mladic reveals when his father's body could be repatriated to Serbia
Even six days after his death, the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals in The Hague did not inform the family of General Ratko Mladic, who died in the detention hospital in Scheveningen, when they could take over his body.
This was revealed by Mladic's son Darko Mladic.
He told Politika that he still has no information about how far the investigation into the circumstances of his father's death has come. The investigatin was ordered by the president of Mechanism, Graciela Gatti Santana.
The investigation into the circumstances of Mladic's death, in accordance with Santana's decision, is led by judge Iain Bonomy, who has been given all the documents about the former VRS commander, including those marked as confidential.
The procedure related to determining the cause of death, as previously stated by the president of the Center for Restoration of International Law Goran Petronijevic, is standard and is carried out after the death of a detainee or convict and is in line with the rules of procedure of the Mechanism, and the procedure regarding the death of prisoners under Dutch laws.
The investigation includes taking statements from persons who found Mladic dead, when they found him, when they last saw him...
Statements of this type are, in the majority of cases, taken from paramedics, guards or those who were in his environment.
An autopsy must be performed, a toxicological report has been ordered, and after that the exact cause and time of death will be announced.
When all the aforementioned procedures are completed and the exact cause of death is determined, the so-called international death certificate is issued.
It is a formal document that guarantees that the person has died, where, when and under what circumstances that happened, and it serves as one of the documents necessary to obtain from the Dutch authorities in order for the remains to be repatriated.
General Ratko Mladic died on August 27 at the age of 84.
