Former Austrian minister dies on vacation in Croatia; wife found him dead on terrace

Hundstorfer is said to have died of heart failure

Former Austrian Minister of Social Affairs and former head of the Association of Austrian Trade Unions (OGB) Rudolf Hundstorfer has died on the Croatian island of Brac today.

Hundstorfer, 67, died this morning of a heart attack while on vacation.

His wife Karin found him dead on the terrace of the house where they were staying.

Hundstorfer became involved with the unions since the 1970s, and in 1990 joined the city and provincial governments of Vienna.

He was for many years the head of the OGB, and from that position from 2008 until 2016 he served as minister of social affairs.

In the last presidential election in 2016, Hundstorfer run as a candidate of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPO).

Austrian President Alexander van der Bellen has offered his condolences, pointing out that Hundstorfer was an approachable man whom everyone could talk to, from top politicians to ordinary workers.
