The ambassador of Holland to Serbia, Gilles Beschoor Plug, spoke after his country decided to use the name the Netherlands (Nizozemska) in the future, and wrote on Twitter that there seem to be some "fuss" around the name of his country in Serbia. Plug said they would certainly respect languages where the name change is not accepted and where his country's name remains Holland.

"There seems to be a bit of fuss about the official name of my country: the Netherlands. Yes, we will stop using the popular name Holland. But we respect languages that don’t have an accepted translation of the Netherlands. In Serbia we will keep on calling ourselves Holandija," he wrote on Twitter.

The Committee for Standardization of the Serbian Language took the official position on Friday, January 10, that the name Holland (Holandija) will continue to be used in Serbia - although that European kingdom decided to use only its official name, the Netherlands, starting on January 1.
