If you find yourself in a blizzard, follow these instructions: Pay attention to these signs

Heavy winds and precipitation have created blizzards and snowdrifts that left one person dead on Wednesday night and dozens trapped in their cars

Snow that has been falling on the Pester Plateau for the past two days, but also in the Jablanica and Zlatibor districts, along with strong winds, has stranded parts of Serbia, and a state of emergency has been declared in the municipalities of Pozega, Crna Trava and Sjenica. Snowstorms and snow drifts left one person dead, while dozens remained trapped in their cars on impassable roads.

If you find yourself out in snowdrifts, extreme cold and heavy precipitation, these are general instructions from the Protection and Rescue Sector that you must adhere to in order not to fall victim to a snowstorm.

- Protect sensitive parts of the body (face, extremities)

- Keep your clothes dry

- Pay attention to emergence of frostbites

- Turn on the radio or TV to keep notified of weather or emergency information

- Save fuel and heat

- Pay attention to the signs of hypothermia: shivering, exhaustion, drowsiness, memory loss, disorientation and difficultly speaking

- If you need to drive: use tire chains, travel during the day and inform your relatives/friends about the intended travel route

- Avoid tall structures, tall trees, fences, telephone cables, and power lines

First aid in case of hypothermia

If a person has symptoms of hypothermia or frostbite, first take them to a warm place, take off their clothes, put on dry clothes and wrap their whole body in a blanket.

In this situation it is important that you warm the central part of the body first and give the person with the symptoms of freezing something hot to drink. Make sure you arrange transportation to a medical facility as soon as possible.
