The National Bank of Serbia (NBS) announced today that the allegations that sanctions will be introduced against it because DinaCard can be used to pay at the gas stations owned by Petroleum Industry of Serbia (NIS, which is under US sanctions) represent an example of unfounded spreading of panic.

DinaCard is a payment instrument used in the domestic payment system in Serbia, just like the dinar, i.e. cash and instant payments are, the NBS said in a statement.
It added that a solution to the NIS issue is being worked on at the highest state level, and that the public will be informed about specifics in a timely manner.
The statement issued by the NBS came after a website claimed that the Serbian central bank will "almost certainly" come under sanctions because DinaCard can be used to pay at NIS gas stations.
