PM Macut addresses Serbian Assembly: We will be judged by what we leave behind, not by the front pages

Prime Minister of Serbia Djuro Macut spoke today at the extraordinary session of the Serbian Assembly, which is considering the opposition's proposal for a no confidence vote in the government, and said that his cabinet will not be judged by the front pages of media outlets, posts on social networks or daily political fighting, but by what it leaves behind.

"The built schools and hospitals, new roads, new jobs, safer institutions, a better life for citizens and a Serbia that is moving forward. It's the only court, of which we are not afraid. And that is why I come before you today calm, in full awareness of the responsibility that I carry, and with the conviction that we worked honorably, honestly and in the best interest of the Republic of Serbia. And once again: this government will not be judged neither by the front pages, nor by social networks, nor by the daily political debates. Serbia will judge it, and before that court we have no reason to hold our heads low," said Macut.

He stated that his government has never shied away from work and responsibility.

"Today we are talking about the kind of Serbia we want: a Serbia of work or a Serbia of constant conflicts? A Serbia of dialogue or a Serbia of blockades? A Serbia of results or a Serbia of political performances? A little over 15 months ago, I took on the responsibility of leading the Government of the Republic of Serbia, invited by President of the Republic Mr. Vucic. And that is not to be refused," said Macut.

He asked the deputies if they have forgotten what the streets looked like back under the previous authorities, stating that it was "not possible to move around in a normal manner".

"Many have asked me why I needed to (get involved), and others stated that I am brave to take on the role of prime minister in such a difficult time. They wondered, or said, because they knew that in my life and career I achieved everything on my own and only thanks to my own work, and that I owe nothing to anyone," said Macut.

He added that he did not accept this responsibility in order to participate in daily political clashes, but to work together with his team in the interest of the citizens.

"As a medical doctor and university professor, I learned that problems are not solved by noise and arguments, but by knowledge, work, responsibility and patience. I am guided by the same principles today. That is why I will not answer to insults with insults, nor to accusations with accusations; citizens expect much more from us, they expect a serious, responsible approach and results," said Macut.

The prime minister added that the results are there, and that in the previous months the government continued to preserve the economic stability of the country, to attract investments, to build roads and railways, to invest in hospitals, schools, science, higher education...

Earlier in the day, the head of the People's Movement of Serbia parliamentary group, Miroslav Aleksic, used his right to speak without a time limit, and took almost four hours to explain the no confidence vote proposal.
